• FIRE DRILLS

The school will conduct a “fire drill” each month that school is in session.  This is a Fire Code requirement as well as a requirement for all New Jersey public schools.  We want each student to understand and be aware of the importance of this drill and not be afraid when the fire alarm is sounded.  By practicing they will know what to do and how to do it.

    EVACUATION DRILLS

During an “Evacuation Drill”, students will be safely escorted along a designated evacuation route to one of our predetermined evacuation sites.  At the conclusion of the drill, all students will be escorted back into the school.

    SECURE PROTOCOL

A Secure Protocol is called for an emergency event which is happening in the community near the school campus. An example of this would be when a bank was robbed and the suspect is on foot near the surrounding area of the school. The exterior of the building will remain secure. No one will be allowed to enter the building or leave the building until the drill is complete. Teachers are able to continue teaching and class periods would change as normal.

    SHELTER-IN-PLACE DRILLS

The purpose of this drill is to be prepared to move to a safe location within the building. Students and staff will not be permitted in the hallways. This event can be used to prepare the building to move into a lockdown, for medical emergencies, or in the event of severe weather. Shelter-In-Place drills can allow instruction to continue, depending on the situation for which it is being called. Similar to other security drills, no one will be allowed to enter the building or leave the building until the drill is complete.

    CODE ANNIE

A “Code Annie” alert is used to identify a possible cardiac emergency on school property. The school is equipped with AED devices throughout the building, including physical education and athletic areas. Faculty and staff who are trained in the use of AED will respond to the scene. A “Code Annie” drill will be practiced annually to test the response and readiness of the Emergency Team. This event typically initiates a Shelter-In-Place to allow emergency personnel clear access to any location within the building.

    LOCKDOWN DRILLS

This type of drill will secure the school building and safely shelter all students, staff and visitors inside the building.  The purpose of this drill is to keep the students safe from any danger outside or inside the building.  During a “lockdown drill”, all perimeter doors to the school building will be locked and will remain locked until the danger or issue outside or inside the building is removed.  To enable everyone to remain safe, no one will be allowed to enter the building or leave the building until the drill is completed.
